How to create your very own indoor garden

Even the most die-hard gardeners have to admit that winter isn’t the ideal time to be out there cultivating our prized outdoor spaces. Does this mean that you have to resign yourself to a few months without your favourite hobby? We don’t think so, in fact, we believe that if you want to carry on gardening through the coldest months, why not bring it indoors?

That is why we have put together our guide to creating a indoor garden, an outdoor inspired space that is fully contained within your home.

Container gardens may just be the way to go

If there is a chance that you will want to move your plants around, or that you will want to eventually take them outside, then you will want to consider a container garden. Container style indoor gardens are incredibly versatile and can allow you to grow a variety of plants in a variety of sizes.

You can choose to go down a more traditional route with terracotta pots bought from the garden centre, or something a little different such as plastic bottles and coffee cans. Any container that you pick should be twice the size of the root ball, and you should either have holes in the bottom to allow the water to drain, or drill them into the container.

Find the perfect space for your garden

In order to have the ideal indoor garden, you need to pick the best space possible for your plants to grow. You should try to locate the indoor garden in an area that gets lots of sunlight, near to east and west facing windows is ideal.

The space should also be warm, and if possible away from air vents or fans, as these machines can dry out plants and damage them.

Choose your plants

There are a number of plants that you can grow inside, however, not every plant is suitable for growing indoors. Some of the most popular indoor plants include:

  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Carrots
  • Beans
  • Peas
  • Mushrooms
  • Strawberries
  • Figs
  • Basil
  • Chives
  • Parsley
  • Sage
  • Peace Lily
  • Cactus
  • African Violet
  • Marigold

As you can see, there are plenty of plants out there that you can pick from for your indoor space. Different colours, different fragrances and most of which are edible and can be included in your home prepared and cooked meals!

Look after your plants and they will flourish

The main thing to think about when planting an indoor garden, is how important it is to properly look after your plants. After all, poorly maintained plants will simply not flourish. Not only do they need plenty of sunshine, but they need to be watered regularly too.

You will also need to keep an eye on the rate that they are growing, as when they are too large for the pot they will need to be transferred or split down.

It is also important that you incorporate compost every few months, as this will help make sure that your plants are getting the nutrients that they need.

Having an indoor garden is not only the ideal way to brighten up your home, but it also means that can indulge in a sport of gardening, even when the world outside isn’t kind!
