Cultivating those mini green fingers;  how to get your kids interested in gardening.

Gardening is a satisfying hobby to have. Taking those tiny seeds and seeing them growing into something beautiful. However, have you ever felt a little lonely whilst out there in your garden? Thought it might be all the more fun if your kids were out there too?

Tempting your children away from their toys or technology and into nature isn’t always the easiest of tasks for parents. So to help you to encourage their green fingers, we have put together some of our top tips for getting them out and about.

Bring out the oddities

One of the simplest ways to encourage your child to have an interest in gardening is to show them some of the weird and wonderful things that you can grow. Odd shaped vegetables; brightly coloured plants and perhaps an edible flower or two. Knowing that there is going to be something to laugh at when they have finished off their gardening is a sure fire way to get them reaching for the trowel.

Give them the fun things to do

Does your kid love the idea of sprinkling water all over the garden? Think they will enjoy getting their hands (and the rest of them) dirty while digging and planting? Make sure that you show your kids how fun working in the garden can be by giving them some of the most fun tasks to do. Once you have their interest then they are sure to want to try out some of the other jobs for themselves.

Find some bugs

Your garden is absolutely packed full with bugs, both useful and annoying. Why not get your kids to go on a bug hunt and see what they can find? Not only will it give them a chance to get dirty but you can also teach them the importance of each of the bugs and how the help the overall garden.

Grow to eat

Another easy way to encourage an interest in gardening is to grow crops that you can eat. Kids get a real sense of achievement when they see something that they planted, cultivated and looked after, finally become something that they can enjoy. Tomatoes are a great starting crop to grow and it is great fun to see them change colour over time.

Encourage a business mind

Children, especially older ones, will be motivated by money. So, make sure that you take advantage of this. Teach them that if they grow herbs and flowers that they can turn these into pressed pictures, or perhaps small bags to sell on. They can also sell their crops that they grow too.

For younger children you could always encourage them to grow their flowers and plants for someone special to them; perhaps a grandparent or friend. This will get them thinking about the end product of their hard work.

Gardening can be fun, no matter how old you are. However, children may just need a push towards getting out there. Hopefully our tips have helped inspire you to take away their tablets and computers, instead getting them out into the fresh air.
