It doesn’t matter what month it is, there is always something to do in your garden. So why not start the year as you mean to go on with some time out in your garden?

We have put together some top tips on the things that you should be doing out in your garden this January.

Take a look at your garden tools

The main theme of gardening in January is one of maintenance and damage limitation. Grab all your beloved garden tools and give them a good old fashioned check over. Take them inside and give them a clean, making sure that you handle any repairs that may be needed. You should also look at your garden furniture and make sure that it isn’t showing any signs of rot.

If it is a sunny day, then it pays to treat your sheds and fences with a wood preservative. Just to make sure that it is in the best condition possible.

Protect from the cold

Love your shrubs and trees and want to protect them during the winter? Why not pack them with straw and wrap in fleece and keep the cold, snow and frost out. The roots can also be protected with a thick dry mulch, which will battle against any freeze!

If you have a greenhouse, then you will want to make sure that they are properly insulated and that any heaters inside it are working properly.

Tidy up and prepare for the year ahead

Moss and leaves can build up during the winter months, so grab your brush and make sure that all paths are looking nice and clean.

If you can, you should try to dig over any beds and borders. Making sure that you mix in as much of the organic matter that has landed there. By forking over the soil you are preparing it for the next 12 months, not to mention uncovering all those garden pests and giving the birds something to eat.

Just because it is cold outside it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to worry about weeds. So, whilst you are digging over the soil, you can get rid of those pesky weeds. All before they have a chance to really take root in the spring.

So, there you go. Some reasons why you should be grabbing your gloves and scarf and head outside into your garden. Even during those cold and frosty winter days there is always a chance to enjoy your outside space and take in some fresh air!
