Spring is the time to plant new plants and seedlings. Summer is the right time to watch them grow. However, preparing your garden for the Autumn will make your garden much better!

What are the gardening jobs that will not only make your garden look neater but will give you a head start?

Examine the garden

Look for bald patches of soil that require soil amendments, overgrown plants that need to be divided, note down which bulbs need to be removed before winter.

Collect seeds

Fruits that over ripen on the plant will have mature seeds that can be collected by soaking the fruit in water and removing the pulp. The weaker seeds will float to the top and can be discarded and the heavier seeds collected and dried before being labeled and stored in a clean, cool, and dry environment.

Tidy up old growth

As the weather cools down and summer growth starts to die off, getting rid of any debris and dead plants will help to decrease pests, diseases and weed seeds and save you a huge amount of time in the spring.

Start a new compost heap

Once you’ve cleared up debris and dead plants from the garden, all of this is great for starting off a new compost heap! You can add old bedding plants, vegetable crop debris and fallen leaves which will compost over the colder months and provide you with a fresh load.

Apply weed killer

Most gardeners recommend that weed killer should be applied twice on the lawn each year. Apply weed killer to get rid of the seeds that have landed throughout the summer.

Examine perennials

You should also examine all the perennials in your garden for signs of disease. Look for spotted leaves or rotting stems and either apply treatment, prune the branch, or remove the plant before the disease spreads to healthy plants in the vicinity.

Check trees for damaged branches

To make sure that people and property are not damaged by rotting branches, check all of them for signs of damage. If you spot signs of danger, get the branches removed.

Thanks to these tips you will save a lot of energy in Autumn, and you will be able to enjoy the beautiful, lively garden!
